Tuff Stone

Tuff stone is a natural rock formed by the compression and solidification of ash, cinders, and dust spread across the earth following volcanic eruptions over thousands of years. Highly identified with the Cappadocia, Nevşehir, and Ahlat regions in Turkey, this stone has been the fundamental building block of historical structures for millennia.

Key Characteristics
Easy Workability: It has a relatively soft structure when first extracted from the quarries. This feature provides great convenience to the master artisan in the art of stone carving and the crafting of fine motifs.

Hardening Over Time: After being cut and shaped, it hardens gradually as it comes into contact with air (oxygen). As years pass, it gains extraordinary durability, becoming almost as tough as steel against natural elements.

Natural Insulation: Thanks to its porous structure, it offers perfect natural heat and sound insulation. Structures built with tuff stone remain cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Lightweight: It is much lighter compared to dense stones like marble or granite, which significantly reduces the structural load imposed on both historical and modern buildings.

Its Place in Architecture and Restoration
From past to present, it has been used in a wide range of structures, from palaces and caravanserais to mosques and civil architecture. Today, it is one of the most preferred natural stones, especially in historical monument restorations, facade claddings, and the faithful reproduction of architectural details such as arches, columns, jambs, and wall copings.

Master's Note: Tuff stone allows for art with a softness that does not tire the master's chisel, while standing as an indispensable material for restoration projects with its time-defying character.
